Women's Professional Soccer

The following ten women (in alphabetical order) are in contention for the title of FIFA Women's World Player 2009;

Nadine Angerer (Germany), Sonia Bompastor (France), Cristiane (Brazil), Inka Grings (Germany), Mana Iwabuchi (Japan), Simone Laudehr (Germany), Marta (Brazil), Birgit Prinz (Germany), Kelly Smith (England) and Abby Wambach (USA).

One question where is Hope Solo on this list? She allowed 1 international goal all year and was arguably the best goalkeeper in WPS. What else does she need to do?

Much too much love given to Germany on this list.

Others I think should have been considered are Ramona Bachmann(Swiss) and Camille Abily(France).

Who do you think should be on this list? Who do you think should win?

Looks to me like Marta and Inka will battle for the title. While I consider Marta still as the legit #1 I guess this is Grings year. Won the league`s top scorer trophy, won league MVP (voted by coaches), won Euros, won Euro scoring trophy, won the Champions league and probably was top scorer in that copetition, too. Heck, I bet her games played/scoring ratio is better than that of Birgit Prinz with the German WNT. She certainly deserves some honors this year.

As mentioned there are a couple of wrong nominations which obviously made the list due to fame/hype rather than actual success during THIS season. Angerer and Prinz have no business being there and it is the wrong year for Laudehr (injury struggles) as well. Linda Bresonik would have been a sound choice if you wanna nominate another German player. Anchoring the German WNT and Chamions league winner Duisburg.

Christiane is yet another silly nomination if you watched her WPS play. Skill sure - but constant and dominating - no way. Smith and Wambach struggled during the WPS season be it for injury reasons or whatever. They still managed to produce at an solid level and proved to be cornerstones to their respective WNT. Borderline nominees to me. Amy LePailbet and Hope Solo would have been stronger - Scott, Aluko or Chalupny more interesting/fresher - candidates. I disagree on Rampone. Great story for sure but her performance particularly during the regular season wasn`t outstanding at all.

Fifa have the final say, not the UEFA, so, as I see it from far,far away, yes it is going to be Marta,Marta,Marta.
Unless, the other way, if you consider the years long womens football tournements or championships, international, national and professionaI club, then I would like to see, Miss Inka Grings take the title this year.
It's not a good year for Brigit Prinz is just recover from injuries.

The votes are not made by the FIFA
the decision is made by the Team Coaches and Team Captains
see: FIFA:COM
FIFA has today announced the names of the players on the short lists (see below) and the final decision will be made by the captains and head coaches of the men's and women's national teams.

At the beginning of December, FIFA will announce the names of the five men and five women who have received the most votes and the winners will be revealed at the 19th FIFA World Player Gala at the Zurich Kongresshaus on 21 December 2009.

It should be noted that coaches and captains may not vote for players from the national team they coach or play for.
